The term “Latin America” is more of a cultural and political designation than a geographic description. It generally refers to the Western Hemisphere countries, south of the United States, where the native language is Spanish, Portuguese, or French. These three languages are Romance languages, which means that they were all derived from Latin, the ancient Romans’ language.
