With a diverse membership spanning South and Southeast Asia, BIMSTEC focuses on enhancing connectivity, trade, and development while addressing shared challenges. Its member states include Bangladesh, Bhutan, Myanmar (Burma), India, Nepal, Sri Lanka, and Thailand.

    • BIMSTEC’s institutional framework requires further strengthening to ensure effective decision-making and project implementation.
  4. Competing Regional Organizations:
    • BIMSTEC must carve out its niche alongside other regional bodies like SAARC and ASEAN.

Future Prospects

  1. Enhanced Connectivity:
    • Prioritize infrastructure projects to improve road, rail, air, and maritime connectivity, fostering trade and tourism.
  2. Digital Transformation:

    • Strengthen collective efforts to address terrorism, transnational crime, and cyber threats.
  5. Institutional Reforms:
    • Enhance BIMSTEC’s organizational capacity by establishing a permanent secretariat with increased funding and resources.

Conclusion

BIMSTEC represents a vital platform for fostering regional integration and addressing shared challenges among South and Southeast Asian nations. By leveraging its unique geographic and cultural diversity, the organization has the potential to significantly enhance socio-economic development and connectivity in the Bay of Bengal region.
