Near Abroad

Russia’s name for the now-independent former republics, other than Russia, of the USSR. The post-Soviet states, also known as the former Soviet Union (FSU), the former Soviet Republics, and Russia as the near abroad are the 15 sovereign states that emerged and re-emerged from the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics following its breakup in 1991.

The fifteen Post-Soviet states in alphabetical order are Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Estonia, Georgia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Latvia, Lithuania, Moldova, Russia, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Ukraine, and Uzbekistan.
