Kuwait

Driving Directions Kuwait

KUWAIT is a tiny Arab Emirate on The Gulf, comprising Kuwait‘s city at the southern entrance of Kuwait Bay, a small desert wedged between Iraq and Saudi Arabia, and nine small offshore islands. Most of the land is barren and consists of a gently undulating plain with no nat­ural watercourses.

Desalination plants use seawater from The Gulf to supply Kuwait’s freshwater needs. The climate is hot and humid in sum­mer and cools to mild in winter with a small rainfall.

Oman

Driving Directions Oman

OMAN, or the Sultanate of Oman, is an oil-rich state in the southern Arabian Peninsula. It has a new enclave at the northern tip of the Musandam Peninsula, separated from the rest of the country by the United Arab Emirates.

Oman is a small country in two parts. It comprises a small mountainous area overlooking the Strait of Hormuz, which controls the Gulf’s entrance, and the central part of the country, consisting of barren hills rising sharply behind a narrow coastal plain. Inland, the hills extend into the unexplored Rub al Khali (The Empty Quarter) in Saudi Arabia.

Palestine

PALESTINE is an ancient historical region on the eastern shore of the Mediterranean Sea, which is also known as „The Holy Land” because of its symbolic importance for Christians, Jews, and Muslims.

It was part of the Ottoman Empire from the early part of the 16th century until 1917 when Palestine was captured by the British. In 1948, the UN partitioned the region between Jordan and the new state of Israel. This created hos­tility among Israel’s Arab neighbors and Palestinians indigenous to the area, many of whom left.

Qatar

QATAR, an oil-rich emirate that lies halfway along the Gulf Coast, is an absolute monarchy. A former British Protectorate, it became fully independent in 1971.

It comprises a low barren peninsula and a few small islands. Apart from some low hills in the northwest, it consists of low-lying, arid, stony desert and salt flats.

Saudi Arabia

SAUDI ARABIA is a monarchy whose government and laws are based on the sacred teachings of Islam. The country plays a leading role in both the Middle East and the international stage. It occupies over 80 percent of the Arabian Peninsula, and most of its ter­ritory is desert.

The largest expanse of sand in the world, Rub al Khali (the Empty Quarter), is found in the country’s southeast – a harsh, uninhabited region hardly ever visited by man.
