FALKLAND ISLANDS (Islas Malvinas) are situated in the South Atlantic about 650 kilometers or 410 miles east of southern Argentina. They are a British Crown Colony consisting of two large islands (West and East Falkland), separated by the 16-kilometer or 10-mile-wide Falkland Sound and surrounded by some 200 smaller islands. In 1982, the islands were invaded by Argentina, who had long laid claim to these Islas Malvinas’, only to be recaptured by a British marine task force a few months later.

Ethiopia

Driving Directions Ethiopia

ETHIOPIA is a landlocked, east African republic that borders Sudan, Kenya, Somalia, Djibouti, and Eritrea. Formerly known as Abyssinia, the country is dominated by a high, central plateau of volcanic rock from which rise rugged mountains ascending to heights of 4,572 meters or 15,000 feet. The Great African Rift Valley divides the plateau into the higher, more rugged, and extensive Western Highlands and the Eastern Highlands’ smaller area. The plateau is deeply dissected by river valleys forming towering cliffs and escarpments, especially in the northeast.

Estonia

Driving Directions Estonia

ESTONIA is a low-lying republic in northeastern Europe bounded by the Gulf of Finland and the Baltic Sea in the north and west, Russia in the east, and Latvia in the south. Estonia is a former constituent republic of the USSR and consists largely of a marshy, undulating plain with numerous forests, lakes, wetlands, and offshore islands. The largest of the islands, Saaremaa and Hiiumaa, lies across the Gulf of Riga’s mouth. The largest lakes are Peipus, which straddles the Russian border, and Vorts-Jarv in its southern central part. Numerous rivers and streams drain the country, including the Narva, which runs along the border with Russia, and the Párnu.

Eritrea

Driving Directions Eritrea

ERITREA, formerly an autonomous province of Ethiopia, gained independence in May 1993 following a long, armed struggle against Ethiopia, which had been in control since 1945. Bounded by Djibouti, Sudan, and Ethiopia, Eritrea has acquired Ethiopia’s entire coastline along the Red Sea. The small Eritrean port of Aseb, in the southeast corner of the country, has been designated a free port guaranteeing the right of access to the now landlocked Ethiopia. Eritrea has a coastal plain rising to a belt of plateaux and mountains in the center and north. West of the mountains, the ground descends to form a region of undulating plains.

Equatorial Guinea

Driving Directions Equatorial Guinea

EQUATORIAL GUINEA lies about 200 kilometers or 124 miles north of the Equator on the hot, humid coast of West Africa. The country consists of a square-shaped mainland area (Mbini) with its few small offshore islets and the islands of Bioko and Pagalu (Annobon). The mainland has a densely forested, rolling landscape broken by some hills. Bioko is a very fertile volcanic island with two high mountains, steep slopes, and a tropical jungle. The capital, Malabo, is situated beside a volcanic crater flooded by the sea.

EL SALVADOR is the smallest and most densely populated state in Central America. It is bounded to the north and west by Guatemala, north and east by Honduras, and the south by the Pacific Ocean. A range of volcanic peaks behind the narrow coastal plain overlooks a densely populated inland plateau. Further inland, the land rises to the interior highlands. The Lempa river cuts through the center of the country and opens to the south as a large sandy delta to the Pacific Ocean.

The DOMINICAN REPUBLIC forms the eastern portion of the island of Hispaniola in the West Indies. It covers two-thirds of the island, the small­er portion consisting of Haiti. The climate is semitropical and occasional hurricanes cause great destruction. The west of the country comprises four almost parallel mountain ranges, and between the two most northerly is the fertile Cibao Valley. The southeast is made up of fertile plains.

DOMINICA, discovered by Columbus, is the most northerly of the Windward Islands in the West Indies. It is situated between the islands of Martinique and Guadeloupe. The island is very rugged and, except for 225 square kilometers or 87 square miles of flat land, it con­sists of three inactive volcanoes, the highest of which is 1,447 meters or 4,747 feet.
